HOW TO MANAGE • Your Cholesterol •

Healthy eating habits and regular exercise are both important factors when working to help manage your cholesterol levels. This helpful guide includes information about cholesterol and why it’s important. It also provides diet and exercise tips that are key to maintaining healthy cholesterol levels.

If diet and exercise are not improving your overall cholesterol levels enough, your doctor may prescribe a statin like LIVALO® (pitavastatin). LIVALO is a statin medication that, along with a heart-healthy diet, improves overall cholesterol levels. While taking LIVALO, it’s important to continue to improve your diet and physical activity. Even minor adjustments to your diet and small additions of exercise can be beneficial.

Some cholesterol basics

Cholesterol comes from 2 main sources What is cholesterol? Why is cholesterol important? How is cholesterol transported in the body?
Some cholesterol is produced by your liver, while some cholesterol comes from your food choices. Cholesterol is a waxy, fat-like substance found in the cell walls in all parts of your body. Your body makes cholesterol because it maintains cellular health, and is needed for the production of hormones, vitamin D, and other substances. Cholesterol travels in your bloodstream in small packages called lipoproteins.

Two types of cholesterol:

When the level of LDL “Bad” cholesterol in your blood is high, the condition can be serious. By itself, high cholesterol does not cause any symptoms, so many people are unaware of it. Remember: Your doctor is the best source of information on cholesterol and what specific levels may mean to your health. Be sure to ask your doctor about how often your cholesterol should be checked.

Understanding food nutrition fact labels

As part of creating a cholesterol-lowering diet, it’s helpful to have an understanding of food labels. Knowing how to read them can help you to make healthier food choices.

Fit exercise into your life — it’s important and worth it

The health benefits of regular physical activity are hard to ignore. As you continue to be active, you may be able to help improve your cholesterol levels.

Take time to exercise The American Heart Association (AHA) recommends a minimum of 30 minutes a day, 5 times a week of moderate exercise. If you do vigorous activities, you can spend about half that time to experience the benefits.

It doesn’t have to feel like a chore Fit physical activity into your daily routine, like taking the stairs, playing with your kids, swimming, biking, gardening, playing sports, or taking a brisk stroll. In fact, the AHA says walking is one of the easiest ways you can improve your heart health.

Always talk to your doctor before starting or changing any exercise program.

Tips for sticking to your routine

Start slow Patterns help Reasonable goals Mix things up
Give your body time to build up to 30 minutes a day (or whatever amount of time your doctor recommends). Try to exercise at the same time of day, every day, so that it becomes a regular part of your schedule and lifestyle. Keep your expectations reasonable and don’t get discouraged if you miss a day or two. Do a variety of activities or change up the scenery/location to stay interested.

Test your heart-healthy food knowledge!

Now that you have gained useful information about healthy foods and eating habits, take this fun quiz to test your knowledge. Below are different food choices for breakfast, lunch, and dinner—see if you can pick the healthiest option for each meal.

Good Luck!
  1. Breakfast

CLICK the healthiest option for each meal and see how you score! Correct! Incorrect, oatmeal is the correct answer! Oatmeal is a good source of fiber, which has been shown to help manage cholesterol levels. Just be sure to avoid flavored oatmeal since it can have sugar. Doughnuts and french toast can contain sugar, fats, and carbohydrates. Fried eggs and bacon, although packed with protein, also come with saturated fat and cholesterol.

    • 1/6
  2. Lunch

CLICK the healthiest option for each meal and see how you score! Correct! Incorrect, salad is the correct answer! Cheeseburgers and hot dogs are usually made with fatty meats that contain preservatives, while any fried meat (even chicken) isn’t generally heart healthy. Salads can be a very healthy option since vegetables are filled with vitamins and nutrients. If you’re looking to add to your salad, choose low-fat meats, cheeses, and salad dressings.

    • 2/6
  3. Dinner

CLICK the healthiest option for each meal and see how you score! Correct! Incorrect, grilled chicken is the correct answer! Grilling is a healthy alternative for cooking chicken. Remember to remove the skin for an added health benefit. Pizza and pasta can be filled with carbohydrates, and steak (no matter how it’s prepared) is a fatty meat.

    • 3/6
  4. Side Dish

CLICK the healthiest option for each meal and see how you score! Correct! Incorrect, green beans is the correct answer! Mashed potatoes, buttered bread, and macaroni salad (although tasty) all contain increased amounts of carbohydrates and fats. Green beans contain vitamins A, C, and K, along with dietary fiber, which can help manage cholesterol levels. For added flavor, try adding some lemon juice.

    • 4/6
  5. Snack

CLICK the healthiest option for each meal and see how you score! Correct! Incorrect, walnuts is the correct answer! Walnuts are one of the most heart-friendly nuts you can eat—they’re full of protein, vitamin E, and healthy omega-3 fatty acids. Energy bars contain protein, but they can also contain sugar. Ice cream is another snack high in sugar, and like other dairy products such as string cheese, you should be aware of the amount
of fat they contain.

    • 5/6
  6. Drink

CLICK the healthiest option for each meal and see how you score! Correct! Incorrect, seltzer is the correct answer! Soda contains large amounts of sugar, and like coffee, it may contain caffeine and other artificial flavors. Although whole milk is a good source of calcium and vitamin D, it also contains fat. Seltzer is the healthiest option because it’s really just carbonated water.

  • Arteries Any of the many elastic-walled vessels that carry blood away from your heart to other areas of your body.
  • Fat A naturally occurring nutrient in many foods. Fat provides 9 calories per gram. Most natural fats and oils are made up of triglycerides. Although fats have received a bad reputation, fat is essential. There are several main types of fat — saturated fat, polyunsaturated fat, monounsaturated fat, and trans fat (trans fats should be avoided).
  • HDL “Good” cholesterol High-density lipoprotein cholesterol, or HDL-C, is called “Good” cholesterol because it carries cholesterol from body tissues to the liver, where it is removed.
  • Lipoprotein A lipid combined with a protein that carries cholesterol throughout the body in the blood.
  • LDL “Bad” cholesterol Low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, or LDL-C, is called “Bad” cholesterol because it carries cholesterol to body tissues, including the arteries, where it may build up.
  • Metabolism Metabolism refers to the processes in which something is produced, maintained, or broken down in the body.
  • Monounsaturated fat Monounsaturated fats are beneficial to your heart and can be used to replace both saturated fats and trans fats in your diet. Monounsaturated fats are fat molecules that have one (hence “mono”) unsaturated carbon bond in the molecule. Olive oil, almonds, and avocados are examples of foods that are high in monounsaturated fats.
  • Saturated fat A type of fat, most often from animals (but also in coconut and palm), that is solid at room temperature.
  • Soluble fiber A type of fiber that absorbs water and slows your digestion, making you feel full longer. Soluble fiber is found in certain foods, such as peas, beans, and apples.
  • Statin A medication that prevents cholesterol from being created in the liver.
  • Trans fat Trans fats are the worst of all fat types. They raise your bad cholesterol and decrease your good cholesterol. According to the AHA (American Heart Association) you should choose foods that have 0 grams of trans fat.
